The North School vs St.Thomas the Apostle Sixth Form College

The North School Lions took on St. Thomas the Apostle College on Wednesday 13th February, in their final home game of the ABL season and they signed off in style with a dominant 93-53 victory.

The Lions offence was fuelled by brotherly love to start the game as Jay and Conal Parnell combined for the home team’s first 7 points! STAC responded in style however, as dynamic Guard Rawle Allicock hit a 3-point field goal and then got to the line on back to back possessions to give the visitors as 9-8 lead. With both teams trading baskets, Lion’s Point Guard Kai Potts asserted his authority on the game with 10 first quarter points that gave the home team a 25-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

A refocused STAC team, led by the outstanding efforts of Michael Asaolu, upped their defensive intensity to start the second quarter and forced 4 straight turnovers to spark a 7-2 run that reduced the deficit 27-20. The Lions responded with a defensive run of their own and 7 straight stops allowed them to halt STAC’s momentum. On the offensive end, the home team looked inside to 2-time ABL Player of the Week, Sean Trumper and he was unguardable on his way to 10 second quarter points that gave The North a 41-23 half time lead.

The third quarter saw the Lions’ offence in full flow and Potts, (Jay) Parnell and Trumper combined for 21 points to push the advantage out to 64-34. STAC responded once again with excellent defensive pressure at the start of the fourth quarter but the Lions were quickly able reassert themselves thanks to the leadership of Parnell and Harvey Kemp-Green. Harry Greenfield provided a real spark off of the bench and his 9 fourth quarter points saw the Lions complete an electric 93-53 victory.

Standout Guard, Kai Potts led all scorers with 27 points for the Lions who also got crucial contributions from Sean Trumper (22); Jay Parnell (15) and Harry Greenfield (9). STAC were led by 17 points from the excellent Rawle Allicock who was backed up by 8 points apiece from Reuben Adenrian and Michael Asaolu.

Lions Head Coach, Andrew Sunderland commented, ‘We knew that STAC were not to be taken lightly; they are skilled, athletic and we responded by giving one of our most complete performances of the season. Our offensive production was led by our defensive effort which is exactly what we are trying to achieve and we were able to get key contributions off of the bench which is a great sign that our depth is developing. Kai, Jay and Sean were all terrific once again and Harry Greenfield has been instrumental for us over the last month. Credit to STAC and Coach Abeleda; they are well coached, super talented and they are going to be a force in the ABL next season!’.

Next up for the Lions is a road trip to COHENEL on Wednesday 27th February, while STAC will play host to Northfleet Technology College on the same day.
