St Thomas the Apostle College vs John Roan School

St Thomas the Apostle played host to a formidable Joan Roan School squad in their penultimate game of 2018, as the visitor’s experience helped them pull away for a 77-86 win.

John Roan continued their impressive run in the ABL Eastern Conference, as they pulled off a strong win against a very resilient STAC team. The visiting side maintained intense pressure throughout the game and closed the game out with some clutch baskets from James Aboaba and Seal Osajivbe, after a late STAC fightback.

STAC fell behind after a 28-10 first quarter, before John Roan continued to pile on the pressure as they built a 23 point lead. STAC fought back to eradicate the lead, behind their own defensive pressure which was led by forwards Nelson Adetuyole and Moses Gordon.

STAC got numerous defensive stops as they kept the game close in the latter stages, but John Roan’s experience killed the game off as they scored timely baskets down the stretch.

The John Roan victory was led by 18 points from James Aboaba, while Sean Babatola added 16. STAC relied on their leading scorers Rawle Allicock and Reuben Adeniran, who scored 25 and 21 respectively, as they tried to keep pace in a high tempo game.

STAC Coach Ryan Abeleda said, “After a disappointing first quarter, I was very impressed that we were able to win the rest of the quarters. We just need to understand – we need to be committed from the first minute to the last. It is another lesson learnt, but it’s a great lesson for the players need to take in. Nothing is ever guaranteed in basketball; all I ask is we keep the intensity for 4 quarters.”

STAC will look to finish the year on a high when they host VI6 Colchester Colleges next week, while John Roan will end 2018 with an impressive 6-1 record and will look to continue their rich vein of form in the second half of the season.
