Queen Ethelburga’s 91-56 Stoke-on-Trent College

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate hosted Stoke on Trent College Wednesday afternoon in the ABL North for what promised to be an intense encounter as QE won 91-56.

The first four minutes would see both teams start the game with tremendous defensive intensity resulting in neither team registering a point until the midway point of the quarter. The visitors took an early lead, but QE would turn up the pace in the final two minutes of the quarter to give the hosts a 17 to 12 lead going into the second quarter.

The remaining quarters saw more of the same with an incredible display by QE guard Elijah Walsh who finished with 43 points in the game. The final score would read 91-56 but was not indicative of the competitive display and manor of which the game was played.

“I think the score is probably a bit misleading”, said QE coach Josh Metcalf. “This was a game our boys were really up for and the home crowd definitely gave us a big boost when pushed early by a tough and well coached Stoke side. I thought Teilo Kelly did a fantastic job chasing around Bayley Gaunt who is a tremendous shooter and holding him to 5 points, bearing in mind he had 80 in a game a few weeks back, is a testament to Teilo’s hard work and preparation. It was great to see our guys stick to the game plan and slow down their key players and hopefully this is something we can build on moving forward”.

Elijah Walsh again displayed the talent that saw him ranked in the top 20 at this past summers Deng camp, finishing the game with 43 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals, while Stoke were led by Tom Odeny who finished with 12 points.

QE will look to build on this performance when they host Loughborough College next week while Stoke will look to get back to winning ways when they welcome Archbishop Beck to Cauldon campus.
