Queen Ethelburga’s School vs Allerton High School

Queen Ethelburga’s School picked up a hard-fought 92-85 home win on Wednesday at home against Allerton High school in the ABL Northern Conference.

Both sides came out firing in the first quarter, as the hosts held a narrow 24-23 advantage, with multiple players on both teams beginning to spark standout performances. Allerton lost one of their top players to injury early in the first quarter when Haben Malcolm Warner went down with a shoulder injury, but the visitors showed tremendous resilience, building a three-point lead going into half-time.

QE managed to slow the visitor’s scoring briefly in the third quarter to edge in front, behind a fantastic performance from Will Jeffels who gave fantastic energy and rebounding off the bench, while Teilo Kelly hit big shot after big shot to keep the hosts ahead. The game remained close throughout the fourth with the hosts finishing as the eventual winners 92-85.

“Tonight’s game was really fun to be a part of,” said QE Coach Josh Metcalf. “To watch some of the individual performances from players on both sides and see the talent level within Yorkshire being showcased tonight made me really happy. Leeds are always a well organised and attack-minded outfit, and to see how much people like Harry Resendez and Bailey England have improved year-in, year-out is a credit to themselves and everybody around them.

“That being said, I’m incredibly proud of our team for continuing to fight and to make such big plays down the stretch, and I’m sure everybody on both sides will be eagerly anticipating the return fixture.”

The Allerton pair of Resendez and England finished the game with 40 points and 27 points, respectively, while QE were once again led by Elijah Walsh who finished with 26, as captain Joe Barrett added 23.

Allerton travel to Archbishop Beck Sports College next week for another top of the table clash, while QE now head into the Christmas break as their next action awaits in the New Year.
