New City College vs Raines Foundation School

A terrifically close game was sealed in the last minute as New City College grabbed a 75-68 victory over Raines Foundation School on Wednesday afternoon.

Without point guard Oristas Vasiliasvokas and big man Michael Folarin, the home side trailed 6-11 with three minutes remaining in the first, before exploding for three triples, one from Simon Torres and two from Aaron Badibo, ending the quarter leading 15-11. Despite this early contribution, Badibo suffered a knock to his back and had to exit the contest.

Laja Ogidan took on the mantle for New City and rattled in 10 points in the second quarter on his way to a game-high 28. The half ended with the hosts holding a narrow 37-34 advantage.

Ogidan combined well with Simon Torres throughout the second half, supported great work on the boards from Ezekiel Lashley who grabbed nine rebounds. After another tightly contested quarter, the third ended with New City leading by a single point, up 56-55.

A triple from Kamar Harrison opened the scoring in the final stanza, followed by Ogidan scoring six without reply. New City led 66-61 with four minutes to play, but Raines responded with a 7-3 run, inspired by the mercurial Simon Roberts as they cut the deficit to 69-68 with a minute remaining. The hosts kept their cool and responded with a sharp 6-0 run to end the game, and grab the 75-68 victory.

Laja Ogidan netted a double-double to pace New City with 28 points and 10 rebounds, making his presence felt under the basket, while Simon Torres added 18 and Ezekiel Lashley chipped in 12. Simon Roberts who led Raines with 18 points, getting support from Jason Prince who added 16.
