Mayfield School 74 vs 54 Leyton Sixth Form

Mayfield Basketball Academy hosted their first game of the season against Leyton Sixth Form, coming out on top 74-54.

The game started slow for Mayfield as they found themselves in team fouls within the opening minutes causing early rotations from the bench. This allowed Leyton to take advantage and finish the opening quarter up 13-15.

The second quarter did not get much better for Mayfield as they continued to struggle with foul trouble and could not find any rhythm on offence due to unusual rotations Mayfield battled through the slumps and although giving up 17 turnovers in the half found themselves going into half time tied 31-31.

The third quarter saw a new Mayfield team full of energy, causing turnovers with their aggressive defence leading to some fast break offence, this resulted in their best quarter of the game outscoring Leyton 24-14. Entering the fourth quarter 55-45.

Great use of the bench and management of the foul trouble meant that Mayfield could begin the fourth quarter with their starting five. With Leyton never backing down and always showing glimpses of making a comeback, a close fought fourth quarter finished in favour of the home team to end the game with Mayfield defeating Leyton 74-54.

Coach Donnie Cabrera said after the game “Credit where credit is due, Leyton came into this game looking to cause us trouble and they did that. We started the game slow and it caused us problems, if it wasn’t for us finding rhythm in the third quarter I think Coach Laviniers team would have beat us today. Although we finished with the result we wanted, we are still looking for a full 40 minute performance, we have showed how good we can be in spurts, but we have also battled through struggles in every game so far. We have to keep working in practice and continue to get better as a team, there is still a long way to go in this season”
