Leyton Sixth Form College vs Colchester College

The Colchester VI6 Academy took to the court on Tuesday this week to take on Leyton Sixth Form College in an ABL clash of the fifth and ninth place teams in the Eastern Conference. The two teams had not previously met this season, due to a postponement earlier in the year.

The first quarter was slow for both teams, with Leyton and Colchester defensively playing in zones. Action picked up when Josh Green and Dylan Beaird of Colchester hit three back-to-back 3-pointer’s, while Leyton were led by their strong inside presence converting some crucial lay-ups inside. A big three by Johnny Mckew with under 30 seconds left in the quarter put Colchester up by 2 points (17-15) to enter into the 2nd.

Leyton wasted no time in the second quarter, scoring on three consecutive possessions to take the lead. Colchester struggled to keep hold of the ball, but a strong take by Riley Taylor and back-to-back three’s by Dylan Beaird helped the home side steady themselves and regain the advantage. Obikwelu for Leyton seemed unstoppable, scoring almost at will while Colchester’s big man Pete Ellis was on the bench. To close out the quarter Colchester hit another late three, this time Dylan Beaird from way downtown, with just under 15 seconds on the clock to lead the home team in the half up 37-29.

Leyton struck first in the second half, as Adewole continued a strong shooting performance and knocked down a three on the first possession. As the intensity of the game increased, so did tensions, as Leyton were hit with a technical foul that put Colchester on the line and increased their lead. Pete Ellis seemed to rule the paint, causing problems for Leyton by cleaning up boards and making put-backs. He was closely supported by Dylan Beaird and Riley Taylor who extended Leyton’s zone by knocking down back-to-back threes, and creating room for him to work. In a hard-fought quarter by both teams, Colchester saw themselves enter the final ten minutes up 56-38.

Two quick threes by Kawoya from Leyton got the fourth quarter rolling for the visitors. Colchester’s Josh Green then caused problems on both end of the floor, hitting a three and getting a steal in successive possessions. Foul trouble afflicted both teams in the fourth, sending Pete Ellis and Adewole from Leyton to the bench early. It seemed to be Colchester’s day, as a strong shooting performance carried the team to a 20-point victory (80-60).

After the game, Head Coach Tom Sadler had this to say, “I thought our guys played hard and aggressive the entire 40-minutes. We were missing a couple of players due to illness and I thought players stepped up and didn’t play intimidated. We talk about being prepared for opportunities when they arise and that is what our guys did. Pete played great for us and did the job on both ends of the floor against a very talented group of players from Leyton. It has been great to see the team grow weekly and we will continue to focus on getting better every day.”
