John Leggott College vs Carmel College

John Leggott College welcomed Carmel College on Wednesday afternoon, and despite an improved performance from their previous meeting, JLC eventually fell to a 63-81 defeat.

Carmel’s Ellis Evans did some early damage, with 7 of his game-high 20 points in the opening quarter but JLC connected on three triples to keep the score at 15-15 at the end of the first. The JLC big men came to the fore in the second quarter, James Ray-Solanke and Matthew Wong both contributed well but George Ball found his shooting touch and gave Carmel a 36-29 lead at the half. A back and forth third quarter which was edged by the visitors set up an exciting fourth quarter with the Carmel lead only 8 points. Ken Ye opened the fourth quarter for the home team with his second three of the game but a 13-0 run from Carmel in the middle of the quarter, led by Evans put the game beyond reach for JLC.

“I think that the performance today shows that we are capable of competing in this league, we got contributions from everywhere today, and the majority of these guys will be back next year so we’re excited about that,” commented JLC Coach, Ross Stafford.

“Carmel can hurt teams in several ways, they had a big size advantage today and did a great job of exploiting that, credit has to go to Coach O’Neill and his players for that. I’d also like to give a lot of credit to our players who gave a good account of themselves and entertained our home fans today.”

Carmel were led by Ellis Evans 20 and George Ball 18 while JLC’s leading scorers were guards Elliot Kerley 14 and Wadah Hassan 13.

JLC are scheduled to welcome the unbeaten Archbishop Beck on 6th February. Carmel are due to travel to Queen Ethelburga’s on 30th January.
