John Leggott College v Archbishop Beck Sports College

John Leggott College were humbled at home by league-leading Archbishop Beck on Wednesday by a 113-29 scoreline.

Archbishop Beck shut down all of the offensive threats available to JLC throughout the game, Dante Sofia in particular applying good defensive pressure. Without leading scorers Matt Melady and Wadah Hassan through illness, JLC found it very difficult to get into an offensive rhythm and found themselves trailing 28-8 at the end of the first quarter and 50-12 at the half.

Beck were paced by 26 points from captain and former ABL Player of the Week Phil Deveney and 25 points from 6’8 forward Dante Sofia. The pair combining for 28 points in a 39-point 3rd quarter for the visiting team.

JLC’s first year forward Cameron Day had perhaps his best scoring game of the season with 9 points in a rare bright spot for the undermanned home team.

“Archbishop Beck rightly sit atop the conference, they had clearly put together a solid scout on our guys and what we do. We didn’t expect any favours and they came to play which is exactly what our guys need to be playing against, we want to be competing at this level but sadly today we weren’t anywhere near good enough.” said JLC Coach Ross Stafford.

“We have to remember that we are a young team and we’re new to this level of competition. Our focus now is on our final game against South Cheshire which will determine our final league position.”

Alongside previously mentioned scorers, Milosz Baranowski and Mohammed Ali contributed 12 and 10 respectively for Archbishop Beck while Elliot Kerley and Matthew Wong had 7 and 6 respectively for JLC.

JLC will close the season at home against South Cheshire College. Archbishop Beck will host Carmel on Wednesday 13th Feb.
