Gateway College vs County Upper School

Wednesday afternoon saw Gateway College play host to County Upper School, with the visitors flying high in the Central Conference with a 4-1 record heading into the contest. It was a tough ask for Gateway from the start, undersized against County Upper’s big front line, as the visitors came away with a 54-124 victory.

Throughout the first quarter, County Upper dominated on the offensive boards which helped them build a solid lead. The size and strength of their inside players held gateway to just six points in the period, as County Upper built a 6-27 lead to end the first. The damage was done by T Revell, Jonathan Bourne, K Asuzu, and Bradley Day, who took turns dominating for the visitors early on.

The second quarter saw more of the same, but Gateway were able to pick up their scoring – led by Ernest Mawomo. Gateway scored 16 points in the quarter, but County Upper continued to dominate on both the offensive and defensive boards as they poured in 34 points in the quarter, leading 22-61 at the half.

County Upper continued their impressive performance in the third, scoring 35 points as Bourne and Asuzu played key roles on both ends of the floor. Gateway were held to 12 points as the margin continued to grow, with the visiting squad now leading 34-96.

In the final stanza, Gateway finally picked up its scoring as Mawomo continued his strong play. The hosts had their best output of the game with 20 points in the period, but County Upper were just too strong, scoring at will with 28 points in the final period, on their way to a 54-124 final scoreline.

County Upper were lead by Jonathan Bourne and K Asuzu who had 28 points apiece, while Jordan Boyd supported with 21 and Bradley Day pulled down 17 rebounds. Gateway College were paced by Ernest Mawomo’s 28 point effort.

The next game for Gateway is a road trip to Moulton College to close out their 2018 schedule on Wednesday 19 December, while County Upper head into the Christmas break with their next action coming on Wednesday 9 January on the road at Loughborough College.
