Gateshead College vs The Sheffield College

It was a return to winning ways for Gateshead College, in a dominant 106-48 win over bottom placed Sheffield College.

Themba Yabantu led the way with 23 points and 10 assists, while Mark Butcher added 18 points and Chris Linsley had 16 with six players in double figures in total.

The first quarter was dominated by Gateshead’s point guard Yabantu, scoring 10 of his game high 23 in the opening period to help his side off to a 29-6 start.

The second quarter was a high scoring one for the hosts despite the best efforts from Sheffield guard Montgomery, who chipped in eight points. Dan Ridley got going in the second to score 10 of his own as the home team won the quarter by 20 to go into half time up 63-20.

The away team had their best spell of the game as they went on a 9-0 run in the first four minutes of the third. However, this only galvanised Gateshead who went on runs of 9-0 and 7-0 in response, leading 92-39 going into the last period. The fourth was more even with Gateshead taking it by five points to win all four quarters and come away with the win.

Dan Kovacs – who replaced the absent Ian Macleod on the day – said; “It was good to get back to winning ways, we need to have a better second half to the season than we did the first.

“After watching the video we were good today, but we can be better and we must keep a mentality that we have something to prove after a poor start.”

For the visitors, Nathaniel Montgomery top scored with 12 points with Alexander Lycoudis adding 11.

Next week Gateshead travel to South Cheshire, while Sheffield have a week off before hosting the Cheshire side themselves.
