Essex Rebels (Vi6 Colchester) 70 – 81 New City College

The Essex Rebels (Vi6 Colchester) Academy were back in action this Wednesday as they took on top of the table New City College in an ABL clash. The teams had met previously in the season, with New City taking the win and continuing an undefeated season.

As expected, the game quickly saw action as New City scored straight from the tip-off. Strong moves to the basket saw them climb to a 6-0 lead, before Essex started to find their footing on a Josh Green three. Action went back and forth for the rest of the quarter, with both teams finding offensive rhythm and entering the second quarter with New City up by two points (27-25).

The high scoring momentum didn’t continue into the second quarter however, as both teams ramped up the defensive pressure and disrupted each other into multiple turnovers. Undeterred was A. Ayinla for New City, who carried his team on offence, scoring 10 of their 16 quarter points. While holding New City to 16, the Rebels themselves were only able to convert five baskets for 10 points, with the teams entering half-time with New City leading 43-35.

Return to play in the second half saw New City start to pull away, outscoring the Rebels 11-2 at one point and entering the final ten minutes up 64-50. While momentum continued to swing their way into the fourth, it didn’t last long. Down by 21 points with seven minutes remaining in the game the Rebels turned the tide in front of a loud home crowd.

A floater and three-pointer by Josh Green started it off, while a massive put back dunk by Ade Atiba kept things on track. Excitement continued to build with three straight three-pointers from the Rebels’ Dylan Beaird and Johnny Mckew. This brought New City’s lead down to just five points with two minutes remaining. Unfortunately, the Rebels couldn’t quite complete the comeback, as they committed four turnovers and two missed shots to finish out the game and had to resort to strategic fouling to stop the clock, where New City capitalised at the line and ultimately won the game 81-70.
