Essex Rebels (Vi6 Colchester) 75 – 44 Long Road Sixth Form

The Essex Rebels Vi6 Academy took to the court this Wednesday to play their second game in less than 24 hours, as a rescheduled game occurred the night before against New City College. The Rebels who entered the game with a record of 3-2 looked to take on Long Road Sixth Form College, for the first time this season, with a current record of 1-4.

After a delayed start both teams took to the court in a first quarter that saw a slow first five minutes as both sides settled into the game. From there, the Rebels took off on the offensive end of the court, dropping 24 points and holding Long Road to just 8 points.

The second quarter saw both teams enter a scoring drought, with scoring action happening in the last two minutes of the half. Tough defence limited both team’s chances of open looks at the basket. However, to end the quarter on a high note, Rebels player Riley Taylor banked in a 3-pointer as time expired, leading the home team into the locker room up 38-15.

After the break both teams returned to the floor, with Long Road having their best offensive quarter of the game, scoring 15 points behind Tash Chawira who chipped in the majority of the points with 11. The Rebels weathered the scoring run by Long Road by dropping 18 points of their own and entering the fourth quarter with a comfortable lead.

Momentum turned all the way in the Rebels favour in the first 5-minutes of the 4th quarter, as they went on a 14-5 scoring run to continue opening up the game. However, once again led by Chawira, Long Road made a last effort push to finish the game, but the Rebels were too far ahead as the game finished with a final score of 75-44. Defence was key for a Rebels team who was missing 2 of their big men, as they forced Long Road into committing almost 40 turnovers for the game. A bright spot for Long Road however was their rebounding performance, which saw them grab 44 boards on the day.

Top performers for the Rebels: Dylan Beaird (17 points, 6 rebounds), Josh Green (12 points)

Top performers for Long Road: Chawira(26 points, 13 rebounds), Holmes (7 points, 16 rebounds).
