Essex Rebels (Vi6 Colchester) 95 – 73 County Upper School

The Essex Rebels Vi6 academy team took on County Upper on Wednesday. The teams met for the first time this season, having had their original match-up postponed earlier in the year. Both teams entered the game mid-table, with Essex sitting in 3rd and County Upper sitting 6th in what was sure to be an exciting game.

The first ten minutes saw the Rebels jump out to a strong lead, going on a 24-3 run, after the score was tied at 8 four minutes into the game. However, not to be defeated so easily, County Upper went on their own scoring run to start the second quarter, outscoring the Rebels 10-0 and regaining a more level score line of 38-31 with 5 minutes remaining in the half. That was until recent ABL Player of the Week Josh Green took over on the offensive side of the court, scoring 9 quick points to lead the Rebels into the half up 52-36.

The third quarter saw a much more balanced game, as both teams’ defensive pressure increased and limited the teams to the lowest combined scoring quarter of the game. Momentum favoured the home team however, as the start of the final ten minutes saw the Rebels go on another scoring run, this time 13 unanswered points, and firmly have the game in hand with 5 minutes remaining. Credit to County Upper who continued to battle until the final buzzer, hitting 4 three pointers to finish off the game. Even with that final push, the Rebels had built too big of a wall, and comfortably won the game 95-73.

Head coach Tom Sadler has this to say about his team’s performance, “I thought the guys have been playing really well together lately and coming off a big win away last week, they stayed locked in, had two really good practices this week, and got the job done today against a talented County Upper team. The boys came out strong and never looked back. They played consistently well throughout the game and that is a great sign for us moving forward that we can play for 40 minutes at a high level.”
