Colchester Academy vs The John Roan School

The Colchester Vi6 Academy team saw themselves back in action on Wednesday as they took on John Roan School at the University of Essex Sports Arena.

Colchester were coming off of a tough loss to the number one team in the Eastern Conference (Haringey Sixth Form College), which moved them to 5th place on the table. John Roan School, who sat in 2nd place, only suffered two losses all season. The two teams previously met earlier in the season, with John Roan School taking a 20 point win.

Colchester got out to a good start with quick transition and passes to go up 11-4. John Roan School quickly settled into the game however, as a couple of and-one opportunities brought them back to level. As the period progressed, John Roan School had no answer for Colchester’s big man Pete Ellis, who had (10) of the team’s first 17 points, while in return Colchester had no response for Babalola who converted a number of tough drives. After a stretch of back-to-back scoring, Colchester headed into the second quarter up 8 (23-15).

The second quarter saw Colchester’s active defence cause some trouble for the away team, as 3 straight turnovers led to Colchester baskets to start the quarter. Shooting woes plagued both teams for the majority of the quarter, with Colchester seeming to come out of the slump first, hitting two 3 pointers back-to-back with under a minute left until halftime. However, a costly turnover and unfortunate foul with 40 seconds left, let John Roan School climb back from 14 down to only down 9 heading into the half.

A sloppy first 5 minutes into the 3rd quarter saw Colchester commit 6 turnovers and the visiting team make some strong transitional lay ups to stay in the game. Colchester’s defence in the half court continued to be a disruption for the John Roan School, while offensively they were able to drive and move the ball for a couple of easy baskets. The gap between both teams grew throughout the quarter with Colchester entering the final ten minutes up by 18 points.

The fourth quarter saw John Roan School up the intensity on defence, going to a full court press that caused a lot of problems for the home team. 7 straight turnovers led to the visitors putting themselves back in the game, trailing by only 9 points with 7 minutes to go. However, Colchester was able to adjust as the visiting team ran out of steam. A big time result to conclude the game, as Colchester took the game with a 20-point victory: 87-67.

After the game, Head Coach Tom Sadler had this to say about his team’s performance, “We controlled the tempo for the majority of the first half and that put us in a good position to win the game. I thought we brought a lot of intensity on the defensive end of the floor but at times didn’t take care of the ball which cost us. Credit to the team who stuck to the game plan and executed it to a good standard. John Roan School is a very good team, so to compete with them and get the win is a big step forward for the team. Hopefully our guys can continue to see that their hard work is paying off and that when they stay focused and give everything they have, they are in a strong position to win games.”

Colchester finished with four players in double digit scoring, and two players recording double-doubles – Pete Ellis (27 points, 13 rebounds), Josh Green (17 points), Dylan Beaird (11points, 10 assists), Ivan (10 points). For The John Roan School, Ayinla had 22 points, Babalola 21 points, 6 rebounds   and Aboaba with 12 points.
