Carmel College vs Queen Ethelburga’s School

Carmel College failed to protect home court in the ABL Northern Conference with a 70-91 loss against Queen Ethelburga’s School.

In a competitive game with both sides displaying good basketball from the get go, it was the visitors who started to pull away late in the first quarter through some dominant play from Joe Barratt, as the QE big man finished with 18 points.

The hosts struggled with the defensive pressure early on but managed to find some solace in Steve Shoan, as the Carmel point guard managed to break the pressure and run the offence himself en route to 16 points.

Both teams played man-to-man for the majority of the game, as the contest went back-and-forth throughout the second half as Carmel only managed to scrape the fourth quarter, but by this point it was too late.

Carmel Coach Dominic O’Neill said, “QE are big, well-organised and very well coached. Josh Metcalf has done an excellent job of teaching these boys to play the right way, they have taken no shortcuts and I thought their maturity and development really showed against us today. We have to stick to our principles and do the same, not taking any shortcuts for short-term gain and focus on long-term development.”

Coach O’Neill added, looking ahead, “This game was excellent preparation for our trip to New York next week where we will face some of the top prep schools on the East Coast.”

The scoring effort was well balanced for the visiting squad as Barrett’s effort inside was backed up by Jed Alexander’s 21 points, while Tommy Skelton finished with 20 and Elijah Walsh added eight. The hosts were paced by 22 points from Finley Moss, supported by Adam Mcgrath who added 12.
