Carmel College vs Archbishop Beck Sports College

A rearranged game saw Carmel College host Archbishop Beck Sports College on Wednesday 12 December, in their penultimate action before the Christmas break, as the visitors ran away with a 61-92 win.

The first quarter would be close with both teams playing good basketball, before the game took a turn for the worse for the hosts – as sloppy turnovers against the Arch Beck zone pressure would lead to easy baskets in transition for the visitors.

The second half would prove inconsistent once again for Carmel as they struggled to break down the half-court zone in spurts, as Arch Beck continued to build their lead. The experience of the away side was evident, with three of their senior players doing the bulk of the damage. Recent ABL Player of the Week award winner Dante Sofia led the way for Arch Beck with 24 points, while the home side were paced by first year guard Fin Moss, who finished with 20 points despite sitting most of the game through foul trouble.

Carmel Coach Dominic O’Neill commented, “It is always tough to play more experienced more physical opposition, but that is what we are here for. We have some injuries and had some foul trouble today, however we have 20 guys in our program and some of them got the call up to step up and that’s exactly what we did. Credit to Archbishop Beck, who are well-organised and play hard, their time is now and I look forward to the rematch.”

Adam McGrath added nine points for the hosts, while Arch Beck got support from Phil Deveney’s 22 points as Arron Howard chipped in 19.

Carmel finish their 2018 schedule with a home tie against Allerton High School next week, while Arch Beck will hosts Queen Ethelburga’s School when the ABL returns in January.
