Aston Manor 57 v 66 Nottingham Academy

Aston Manor lost their 2019/20 season opener to a very good Nottingham Academy side 57-66 on Wednesday afternoon. Akol Ring led all scorers with 17 points but it wasn’t enough as the East Midlands’ side managed to get  10 of their 12 players on the score sheet.

Both teams started well with Ring and Jackson Bisungu (16 points, 5 steals) doing most of the scoring for their respective sides as Nottingham took a two point lead, 34-36, into the half time break.

Nottingham came out for the third period and upped their defensive pressure and restricted Aston Manor to only 7 points for the quarter while scoring 21 of their own.

Although the hosts did manage to win the fourth quarter, it wasn’t enough as their 16 missed free throws proved costly in a relatively tight game.

Aston Manor Head Coach Curtis Xavier: “Congratulations to Coach Wright and his team. It was a well deserved victory as they maintained their intensity and execution throughout the game.”

Diogo Mendes aided Akol Ring with 13 points and Sistus Anochie chipped in with 7 points and 11 steals. Ismael Ahmed had 12 points and Tim Clinksdale 11 for the visitors. Special mention goes to Nottingham’s Aaron Hill who pulled down a massive 20 boards.

Aston Manor travel to Cheshire College next week to try and get their season on track while Nottingham are at home to Archbishop Beck.
