Aston Manor Aacademy vs St.Charles College

Aston Manor lost a nail-biter of a game on Wednesday afternoon, falling 74-75 to St.Charles Sixth Form College in the Semi-Finals of the ABL Playoffs.

The game was a tight from the tip as both teams were playing their brand of high up-tempo defence and fast breaks. With both sides trading baskets, St.Charles’ Adedo (28 points) led the away side going into the 2nd quarter 13-19 up. The 2nd quarter however, belonged to Aston Manor with some excellent play from Zack Powell and a spectacular dunk from Ryan Anglin that got the home crowd jumping, and brought Manor back to take a 39-36 half time lead.

The 3rd quarter saw Adedo and Powell hit some huge shots as St.Charles punished Aston Manor for some sloppy play on offence, to take back the lead and take a 56-61 advantage into the final quarter. St.Charles then extended their lead to 11 points with 4 minutes remaining. The success was short-lived, as Adedo fouled out and Aston Manor capitalised to retake the lead with 40 seconds left on the clock. After Coach Xavier’s final timeout, Aston Manor looked to run out the game but a steal from Mohamed and the game winning layup from Tariq Powell broke the home teams dream of a final appearance, with Roland Grodkowski’s last second desperation shot hitting the front of the rim.

“Congratulations to St Charles and good luck in the final,” said Coach Xavier. “Tremendous effort and really well coached.”

Ryan Anglin led the home side with a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds, whilst Zack Powell and Roland Grodkowski both added 16 a piece. Zack Powell has 15 points for the St.Charles with Mohamed chipping in 10.

St.Charles now move on to play Haringey Sixth Form College in the ABL Finals on April 3, while Aston Manor play Haringey in the Quarter-Fnal of the AOC National Premier Cup at home on Wednesday 27th March.
