Archbishop Beck 73 – 79 Aston Manor Academy

In this return fixture where Aston dominated Beck in Birmingham and held them to just 38 points, the host team had a lot to prove.

Archbishop Beck came out aggressively with their Zone press and caused several turnovers and frustrated the visitors.

In a relatively low scoring quarter Aston led 15-9.

The second quarter both teams picked up the tempo and Dario Mataj found the hot hand with three triples off the bench to give him 11 points in the quarter. Mendes had another solid quarter making some nice plays and had 7 points.

Aston won the quarter 23-20, giving them a 9 point lead at half time.

The second half saw Beck come out with an explosive quarter, holding Aston to only 13 points whilst scoring 23 themselves. This gave the hosts a one point lead 52-51 at the start of the final quarter.

With all to play for and trying to avenge an earlier 40 point loss, Archbishop Beck went into the final quarter full of confidence, but their lack of size on the interior started to show with Aston getting key offensive rebounds at crucial times and Mendes stepping up with some big plays and finishing off a great afternoon with 28 personal points.

Aston had a strong final quarter and scored 28 points to Becks 21.

Quote: “It was a fantastic effort by our boys who have improved significantly following the earlier 40 point loss to Aston Manor. This game went down to the wire but our lack of depth and experience showed down the stretch.”
