ABL still on hold amid Covid-19 lockdown

As the ABL continues to lay dormant due to the Coronavirus pandemic across the globe, the Academy finals originally scheduled for Wednesday 18 March remain in a holding pattern.

Whilst the vast majority of Basketball England’s activity has either been cancelled for 2019/20, or suspended indefinitely for programmes that run all year round, the Academy Finals are one of the few remaining competitions that could still potentially be resumed before the end of the 2019/20 academic year.

“The reason that competitions including the EABL, WEABL, ABL haven’t been cancelled completely is because they are within one game of completion,” said Basketball England’s Senior Delivery Manager Gail Richards.

“If there is an opportunity to finish these competitions safely, responsibly and fairly before the end of the academic year then we’ll explore that option.”

A decision on this will be made no later than 28 April 2020, but for now the Finals for 2019/20 are on hold.

Update (28/04/2020) – A new date for re-examining the situation has been set for 11 May.
