Player of the Week: Chima Obikwelu

Chima Obikwelu has been awarded the Player of the Week after crucial contributions in Leyton Sixth Form College’s 70-69 win over St Thomas the Apostle College in Week 5 of the ABL Eastern Conference.

Obikwelu poured in 30 points, almost half his team’s tally on the day, while adding 13 rebounds to go along with an assist, a steal and a block. The 6’4″ Leyton forward shot 71.4% on the day, going 15-21 from the field, en route to an efficient scoring performance.

Obikwelu spoke about receiving the award, “I’m really proud to be the recipient of this award; I would like to thank coach David and the squad. As a second year player, I feel like I’ve taken on some more responsibility in the team this season, and I am glad to be playing my part. I’m always focused on learning and improving my game, and will continue to work hard in training.”

Leyton Coach David Lavinier added, Chima has been working really hard in practice, focusing on his individual offence and defence, which is starting to pay dividends. His work ethic and attitude towards learning is of the highest standard. Getting recognised as ABL Player of the Week will hopefully encourage him to continue developing.”
